The limits of precision

Wednesday, Apr 22, 2020 by KSC covid19, spotlight

I’ve taken advantage of the quarantine to finally finish The Emperor of All Maladies. I was particularly struck by one of the book’s heroes, Sidney Farber, who developed the first drug to treat cancer. Through a combination of determination and serendipity, he discovered that folate blockers could cure childhood leukemia, at least temporarily. Today, further advances in therapy have brought once-unthinkable cures to leukemia and other cancers. Of course, the side-effects of these therapies also mean that supportive care has needed to evolve alongside it.

Surviving The Quarantine

Wednesday, Apr 15, 2020 by Lindsay Mendyka covid19, spotlight

To say life has been challenging since the pandemic began would be an understatement. Day #3005? of quarantine: Life at the Beeman household has been going pretty well. The days are starting to blend together, and things we did last week seem like a month ago. Since my husband has been deemed “non-essential”, he has been off work for the past few weeks and has been fully embracing the stay-at-home-dad life. We have been filling our days with projects around the house, like finally unpacking from moving a few months ago and catching up on yard work that we have been putting off.

COVID-19, forcing an audible on Peter’s research

Wednesday, Mar 25, 2020 by Peter Schoettler covid19, spotlight

Prior to COVID-19 Life before COVID-19 in some ways seems a lifetime ago, but it was less than two weeks ago that research, work, and life in general were running smoothly. I was dropping my son off at daycare, going to work every day, and able to buy toilet paper whenever I wanted. I was finally starting to make some progress on my project trying to find new treatments for the rare pediatric lung cancer, Pleuropulmonary Blastoma, or PPB.
